Final Fantasy 7 Remake is finally happening!

Once upon a time there was a company called Square that made video games. Their flagship title was Final Fantasy, which sold well in Japan but was released irregularly in the rest of the world. Square hit it big in 1997 when it released Final Fantasy 7 to critical acclaim. Stepping up from the Super Nintendo to the Playstation, Final Fantasy 7 really pushed the visual envelope to new heights at the time.

For many (your truly included) FF7 was the first venture into the weird world of Final Fantasy and as such holds a special place in many gamer’s hearts. While the game featured revolutionary graphics at the time, it started to look its age as technology progressed. When Square showed off a tech demo for the Playstation 3 in 2005 that featured a reworked version of the intro of Final Fantasy 7, many started dreaming of a Final Fantasy 7 remake featuring new state-of-the-art graphics and sound. Sadly though Square had no actual plans in that direction, leaving fans with their dreams. Still Final Fantasy 7 never really went away, keeping a legion of loyal followers. Square itself revisited the world of that game throughout the years with a CGI movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and some prequel/sequel video games of varying quality. While the remake never truly went away from the rumor mill (why wouldn’t Square want to capitalize on the by-now cult title), now it is officially happening: 17 years after the release of the original we’re getting a Final Fantasy 7 remake! Please enjoy this E3 announcement trailer:

Details are still scarce about when you can expect to revisit the world of Cloud and his nemesis Sephiroth but you can bet it is going to look gorgeous! So far no word yet on when this will be released, what changes they’re making from the original, who is going to voice it etc. So just stay put, more news is bound to follow in the following weeks and months.

I used to love this game, and by ‘love’ I mean I was obsessed with it for a good few years! I played it through regularly and collected artwork that I hung up in my room and such. For a long time my online alias was EvilCloud. Even though I hardly have the time to game anymore I still have very fond memories of FF7. Can’t wait to see what they’re going to do with the remake.
