News: Constantine officially ordered to series by NBC

The TV landscape is definitely changing. Over the past 15 years superhero movies have turned into a multi-billion business and now TV wants to get a piece of the pie. An unimaginable amount of comic books are now getting the small screen treatment like The Flash, Gotham, Scalped, DMZ, Peacher, iZombie, Daredevil and three other shows specifically for Netflix.

matt-ryan-as-john-constantine-ftrA Constantine TV adaptation has been in development for a while now and NBC must like how the show is coming together because it ordered it to series. Man of Steel and The Dark Knight screenplay writer David S. Goyer is said to produce the show.

John Constantine first appeared in 1985 during Alan Moore’s run on Swamp Thing. In issue #37 John arose out of a desire from artists Stephen R. Bissette and John Totleben, to draw singer Sting into a comic. (This was at the height of The Police’s popularity mind you!). Moore rose to the occasion and came up with a modern, urban warlock by the name of Constantine to serve as a sort of handler for Swamp Thing.

The character really came into his own when he got his solo series in 1988. Being mainly set in Britain it captured the emotional backlash of the end of the Thatcher era. When imprint Vertigo launched John Constantine: Hellblazer in 1993 it became one of its flagship titles.

John is a reluctant hero who’d rather be left alone, but his connection to the world of magic and the occult always pulls him into that web. While his knowledge of magic is extensive he usually relies on his cunning intellect to get the job done.

Constantine’s personality makes him such an intriguing character so the show will have to get it right if it wants to capture the audience. He will be played by Matt Ryan in the show.

When done right this could end up as an amazingly unique show. In any case there have been a ton of powerful stories in the comic books for the show to draw from. I like my shows a bit dark and twisted so I’m quite curious how this one will turn out!

No news yet on when NBC plans to start airing Constantine but check out the trailer here!
